AN HONOR

Upon our return to the Pacific NW we applied for membership in the Cruising Club of America (CCA) and were accepted into the Club in the Fall of 2010 by the Pacific NW Station. The CCA publishes an annual magazine, Voyages, which features articles written by members. Last Fall Mark submitted an article, "Ice Dream", featuring Nancy's photos. Each year the club gives out the Charles H. Vilas Literary Prize for an honored article and in February we received news that we had received the award for our article, and that one of Nancy's photos would be on the cover of the magazine.

An invitation to the CCA Annual Awards Dinner at the New York Yacht Club on March 2nd was extended and after much consideration it was decided that we would accept the award in person. Being able to use airline mile awards and a free night at the NYC Yacht Club made the decision to go all the more appealing. But it was going to have to be strictly a fly in, fly out trip.

Mark had already made plans for a winter voyage in Prince William Sound and was scheduled to drive to Alaska late February with ferry reservations already made from Valdez to Cordova. The awards dinner was going to delay his departure a week.

So we left Seattle on Thursday, March 1st mid-day, arriving NY at mid-night, and over nighting at Laguardia. Next day, Friday, we went into the city and checked into the Yacht Club for the Awards Dinner that night. Nancy spent a couple of hours walking through Central Park. Cocktails at 5:30 pm, then dinner, the Awards, a late night in the bar, and to bed at 2:30 am. Up at 4:30 am, bus to Newark airport for a 7:30 am flight. Land in Seattle at 10:30 am and pickup the van that was left at the airport (only 49 hours since being dropped off). Mark drops Nancy off in downtown Seattle and he takes off for Alaska! Wow! OK, where did we go?

Despite the rush we did have fun and met a lot of people. The Blue Water Medal went to Kicki and Thies, sy Wanderer II, who we had met briefly in Ushuaia, Argentina and again in Stanley, The Falklands. It was fun to meet up with them again and update each other. Also present at the dinner were Bob and Robin, sy Misty Dawn, who we had never met but had talked with many times on the Patagonia Net.
