December 31, 2007: Position Report

63 54.3 S 60 47.1 W
Dropped anchor at 3 am this morning in Mikkelsen Harbor, Trinity Island. The autopilot was giving us problems so we each took 1 hour at the helm for 12 hours in 25-30 k Easterly winds with either sleeting rain or snow. The last two hours the person at the helm could not see forward and had to be piloted, while the other two kept a look out for ice. Needless to say we were exhausted when we finally dropped anchor, thankful to be secure and able to finally sleep. Welcome to Antarctica!!
Slept in late and then began reorganizing the boat and get the autopilot working again. nowed off and on all day. Will put the dinghy together in the morning and try and get ashore to view the penguin colony - can't tell at this distance what kind they are, but we can see them all over the small island we're anchored off.
We can hear ice breaking off the glaciers surrounding the bay and have to keep a watch for any potential bergs heading our way. Unless ice forces us to leave, we will stay another day or two before moving on.
